When Jamaican sprints legend Usain Bolt takes his seat alongside World Athletics President Sebastian Coe on Thursday afternoon, it will not merely mark the traditional opening press conference of World Athletics Series events at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship Budapest 26. It will signal the launch of "The Day Before" — a radical, three-hour experiential overhaul designed to replace the sterile, monotone pre-event press conference with an immersive festival of athlete personality and content creation.
Gone are the days of rigid, podium-bound Q&A sessions as the sole window into an athlete's mindset. For three hours on the eve of competition, Budapest is transforming its premier venue into an interactive playground where the boundaries between elite sport, lifestyle culture, and media access dissolve entirely.
The afternoon begins with an opening address featuring Bolt — now officially carrying the mantle of Ultimate Legend — alongside Coe and Hungarian dignitaries. But once the formal curtain is drawn, the stadium shifts into an avant-garde rotation of staggered red-carpet lifestyle arrivals, complete with Glambot video capture, and a dedicated VIP content zone tailored for the modern digital ecosystem.

The centrepiece of this structural evolution arrives midway through the afternoon with a bold competitive trial: the live 200m lane draft.
In a sharp departure from decades of administrative blind draws, athletes in the men’s and women’s half-lap events will step up to select their specific semi-final heats and lanes live in front of an audience. It is an innovation engineered to inject immediate tactical drama, controversy, and narrative tension into the championship before a single starter’s pistol is fired.
“Athletes competing in the men’s and women’s 200m will select their semi-final heat and lane live in front of an audience. The concept is being trialled at the Ultimate Championship as part of an effort to transform the traditional lane allocation process into an athlete-centred moment that generates analysis and conversation before competition begins,” World Athletics’ Communications team said in a media advisory to accredited media on Thursday.
“The Day Before is a new concept that transforms the traditional pre-event press conference into an afternoon of media and content opportunities, giving accredited media greater access to athletes in a less formal environment while allowing athletes to showcase their personalities and create exclusive content,” the advisory added.
“A formal press conference will open proceedings, featuring World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and Ultimate Legend Usain Bolt, while participating athletes will feature across a range of activities taking place throughout the afternoon. Attendance at The Day Before will be restricted to media accredited for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship Budapest 26.”
As track stars like American sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Botswana’s “Schoolboy” Letsile Tebogo, the Olympic 200m champion, wrap up the afternoon leading local children in the Kids’ Athletics Ultimate Challenge, the message from Budapest is unmistakable: By handing the microphone, the spotlight, and even the lane choices directly to the athletes, World Athletics is betting that the future of the sport's storytelling lies not in formal briefings, but in unscripted, high-energy spectacle.
Other attendees at the pre-event press conference have been lined up as Gábor Pósfai, the Minister of the Interior of Hungary, and infield host Dawn Harper Nelson, Olympic gold medal winner in the 100m hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and silver medalist at the 2012 London Games.
