Copenhagen:
Global powerhouse nations Kenya and Great Britain have thrown down the gauntlet for next month’s World Road Running Championships, joining a star-studded European contingent from Italy, Norway, Portugal, Finland, and host nation Denmark for the global showcase on 19 and 20 September.
Defending champions Kenya already named a terrifyingly fast 16-member team designed to dominate the medal table in the Danish capital with the squad featuring world 10km record-holder Agnes Ngetich, who will make her championship road-running debut in the half marathon alongside world half marathon silver medallist Daniel Ebenyo.
In addition to their heavy hitters in the 21km event, the Kenyans are sending formidable squads for the shorter disciplines, including Commonwealth Games 5,000m champion Mathew Kipsang in the 5km and Brian Komen in the road mile.
The African dominance faces stiff opposition from Europe, led by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen. The Norwegian icon is set to cap off a grueling, three-week championship streak by contesting the 5km. Fresh off a busy track season, Ingebrigtsen faces an ambitious schedule that includes the Diamond League final and the World Ultimate Championships on consecutive weekends leading right into Copenhagen.

He will be joined in a formidable Norwegian line-up by Narve Gilje Nordas, Magnus Tuv Mhyre (mile), and European cross-country star Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal, who tackles the half marathon.
UK Athletics confirmed the Great Britain and Northern Ireland roster will also hunt for medals in the shorter events. Mid-distance specialist Jake Heyward alongside sub-four-minute miler Archie Davis have both been named to lead the British charge in a highly competitive road mile field.
Italy brings a potent 10-athlete contingent spearheaded by national half marathon record holder Yeman Crippa.
The Italian squad also features recent European Championship bronze medallist Micol Majori in the 5km, alongside national marathon icon Sofia Yaremchuk and middle-distance threats Pietro Arese and Ludovica Cavalli in the mile.

Portugal is also sending a 10-strong team, anchored by reigning world indoor 1500m champion Isaac Nader. He will be accompanied by Jose Carlos Pinto, Patricia Silva, and Salome Afonso.
Host nation Denmark will look to Juliane Hvid and Joel Ibler Lillesø to spearhead their eight-member roster across the mile and 5km road events, while Finland sends a compact but high-quality pair consisting of Santtu Heikkinen (mile) and Nathalie Blomqvist (5km).
