Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Interim President General Jackson Tuwei has finalised a revised schedule for the organization’s 2027 events in Eswatini and established the complete timeline for upcoming regional elective congresses, following a working visit to the CAA headquarters in Dakar that concluded on September 2, 2026.
During discussions held in the Senegalese capital alongside the Local Organizing Committee, officials agreed to a slight adjustment of the dates for the major continental gathering in Eswatini.
The events will now take place sequentially from March 17 to March 20, 2027, opening with the Council Meeting on March 17, followed by the Elective Congress on March 18 and the Technical Meeting on March 19. The proceedings will culminate with the Cross-Country Championships on March 20.
In tandem with the Eswatini schedule, the CAA released the precise calendar for regional elections leading up to the continental congress.
The Northern Region will kick off the electoral cycle on January 3, 2027, in Tunis, Tunisia, followed by the Central Region on January 5 in Bangui, Central African Republic. The Western Region is set to hold its elections on January 9 in Lagos, Nigeria, with the Southern Region convening on January 13 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The regional election series will conclude in the Eastern Region on January 16 in Djibouti, Djibouti.
Following the conclusion of the regional ballots, the CAA stipulated that the official list of delegates and elected regional officials must reach the confederation no later than midnight GMT on January 31, 2027.
Meanwhile, Africa will know whether it will host its first Senior World Championships when the World Athletics Council announces winning bids for the 2029 and 2031 World Championships on September 15 after its Council Meeting in Budapest, Hungary.
Nairobi has presented a strong African bid and will compete with Munich, Rome and London for the hosting rights. Next year’s World Championships will be held in Beijing where World Athletics will also hold their elections with President Seb Coe having completed his constitutional two terms in office.
The World Athletics meetings will be held on the sidelines of the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship that runs from September 11 to 13 in the Hungarian capital.
