The standard for football in Yaoundé, Cameroon, was forged on the unforgiving, dusty red-dirt pitches where only the strongest survived. For André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, these rugged terrains were his first classroom.
He possessed an innate physical power, but it was his sharp footballing intelligence that truly set him apart. His raw talent caught the attention of local scouts, earning him a place at Coton Sport FC de Garoua, where his professional dreams began to crystallize.
By 2014, European football came calling, and the teenager packed his bags for France to join Reims' youth setup, stepping onto a trajectory that would take him to the absolute pinnacle of European football.
His true club breakthrough arrived when French giants Olympique de Marseille spotted his immense potential. Transitioning to the demanding environment of Ligue 1, Anguissa quickly evolved from a promising prospect into a midfield powerhouse.

Standing tall with an imposing physical presence, he became renowned for breaking up opposition plays and seamlessly transitioning defense into attack.
His defining moment with Marseille came during their thrilling run to the 2018 UEFA Europa League Final. Though they fell short against Atlético Madrid, Anguissa’s relentless energy and tactical maturity on the European stage announced his arrival to the world.
Multi-Million-Pound Transfer
The English Premier League soon beckoned, and Fulham secured his signature in a high-profile, multi-million-pound transfer. England proved to be a rollercoaster. Fulham struggled with relegation, forcing Anguissa to adapt his game to the frantic, physical tempo of British football.
A subsequent loan spell in Spain with Villarreal allowed him to showcase a different dimension of his artistry. In La Liga, his technical proficiency blossomed; he paired his signature tackling with elegant dribbling out of tight spaces. He returned to Fulham a much more complete, versatile midfielder, yet his definitive footballing home was still waiting for him in Italy.

In 2021, Anguissa joined SSC Napoli, a move that would permanently etch his name into football folklore. Under the tactical guidance of Luciano Spalletti, Anguissa became the vital engine room of a mesmerizing Neapolitan side.
Alongside partners like Stanislav Lobotka, he provided the perfect equilibrium of steel and silk. The pinnacle of his club career arrived during the historic 2022–2023 season, when Napoli captured their first Serie A Scudetto in 33 long years.
The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona erupted in euphoria, and Anguissa was celebrated as an indispensable hero who restored glory to the south of Italy.

Concurrently, Anguissa became a talismanic leader for the Cameroon national team, the Indomitable Lions. Making his debut in 2017, he quickly established himself as the heartbeat of the nation, securing a total of 67 caps and scoring five goals. He represented his nation fiercely, contributing to an Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal in 2021 and showcasing his prowess at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Source of Immense Pride
However, today, Monday, August 31, 2026, moments after Argentine great Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football, Anguissa stunned the footballing world. At a time when intense speculation suggested he was next in line to formally become the captain of the Indomitable Lions, the 30-year-old midfielder chose a different path.
Taking to his official social media page, he published an emotional farewell: "After several years with the national team of Cameroon, I have taken the decision to stop my international career. Wearing the Indomitable Lions jersey has been an immense honor and a source of immense pride."
Standing at a crossroads where leadership of a nation awaited, Anguissa chose to close his international chapter, leaving behind a legacy of absolute dedication while continuing his journey strictly on the club stage with Napoli.
He left his fans devastated.
It was a complete shock to me. I have no idea for his reasons for this premature retirement. It is a big blow to the Cameroon national team and I hope he changes his mind, if it's a decision outside a sporting one,” fervent supporter of Anguissa, Ali Hilton, known locally as “Aliko Dangote” and who manages a local football team, Mbiplah FC, reacted.
Samuel Eto’o Tribute
The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o also paid tribute to the international career of Anguissa.

He participated in several editions of the Africa Cup of Nations — notably the 2021 tournament hosted by Cameroon, where the team finished third — as well as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In its statement, FECAFOOT honored a player whose commitment, generosity, professionalism, and leadership it highlighted. Eto’o expressed his gratitude for the player's dedication to the national team and wished him success in the remainder of his career and personal life.
With Anguissa’s departure, Cameroonian football turns an important page as it prepares to launch its qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
